Let’s take a look at what makes it tick. Technology continues to develop at a rapid pace, especially in the field of consumer electronics. Where DVD red laser disc players were once the frontier of movie technology, now there is Blu-ray, with blue laser technology. Digital Versatile Disc (DVD) is already being replaced by Blu-ray Disc (BD). This means great changes in terminology, but greater still in technology.
The advantages of BD are numerous. Blu-ray is available in read-only (BD-ROM), recordable format (BD-R) and rewritable (BD-RE) formats. A single layer BD is 25GB, while a dual-layer BD has 50GB capacity. That is more than five times the storage available on a DVD. A dual-layer Blu-ray disc can hold 9 hours of HD video. BD also supports a ton of video and audio codecs. It supports every codec that DVD supports, Dobly True HD, DTS-HD and DTS digital surround sound codecs, and MPEG-4AVC and SMPTE VC-1 video. While a DVD can only run at 9.8 Mbps, the video bit rate on a BD is 40.0 Mbps. It should be clear why BD is the trend of today and the near future.
Many new releases and movies soon to be released on video have been released on Blu-ray. The convenience of owning a Blu-ray player is that it is compatible with both DVD and CD formats, as well as BD. Those who love high definition television and movies love BD because, unlike DVD, it supports high definition (HD). BD also offers a menu that you can surf while the movie continues to play in the background. BD means no more starting and stopping videos to find a scene. The hard coating on Blu-ray discs prevents them from scratching and becoming destroyed as easily as DVDs. BD is resistant to scratches and excessive wear.
There is a HD-DVD that is like BD. It uses blue laser technology, but the audio/visual quality just cannot compare to that of BD. Additionally, HD-DVD is not a good investment because most production companies do not release HD-DVD movies. Soon, the easiest and most convenient format to find will be BD.
Soon Blu-ray will be the primary movie format, superseding DVD. DVD will decline in popularity as major movie companies continue to release more and more BD and fewer DVD formats.
Make sure you own a Blu-ray player. In the near future it will not be possible to find movies in DVD formats. As DVD players die, they will be replaced by this new, high definition technology. Blu-ray prices are very affordable. BD formats of movies can be found starting at $6-$7 to $50-$60 for sets and series. It is worth the price for the high definition quality and sleek new features. If looking for a cheap blu ray player, you can find good deals and prices online.
