Generally speaking, in order to survive the ordeal leading up to the day of wedded bliss, is to first of all decide what sort of dress is going to be worn. This may be something traditional-looking or it may be a bit more contemporary, like a strapless wedding gown. In truth, there’s probably a sort of age cutoff for the strapless version, though it should be left up to the bride (most brides would demand), of course.

Today, weddings and all that go on around them is a multi-billion dollar concern and there are a ton of other businesses that — while tangential to weddings, for the most part — also benefit from the activity. For example, take a minute to think about the personal look that a bride (and even a groom) will bring to the altar. Maybe undergoing a little laser hair removal is a good idea, and it’s cheaper than waxing over the long run.

Let’s face it; cable TV is full of shows depicting ‘bride wars’ and other programs that highlight the anxieties that many a bride experiences in the run-up to the big day. Truthfully, almost every show depicts a bride in one stage of manic activity or another, especially when it comes to their looks or the clothing their wear. They’re shown also worrying over the kind of jewelry they and their bridesmaids will be wearing.

In this regard, watch what happens whenever a bride ends up with the wrong kind of jewelry for herself and her bridesmaids. Being saddled with cocktail jewelry, for example, when the appropriate bridal jewelry is what’s really needed, can make for very colorful television. Truth be told, there’s almost no difference between most forms of such jewelry other than the name given it, but try telling that to a seriously stressed-out bride.

Today, it seems that almost everything out there conspires to drive a prospective bride to distraction or worse. Men dread the thought of having to shop for much of anything not related to bass fishing or sports cars and would probably look at the kind of shopping a bride has to do as being similar to being hung by their thumbs. Brides, though, are true shopping warriors and with the help of the Internet can pull it off amazingly well.

In the end, when it comes to the big day, most people aren’t exactly sure that all of the activities that go into making for what might be considered the perfect wedding, in one’s own eyes at least, are worth it in the run-up to the wedding but they certainly would say it was all worth it when the big day has come and the deed has been done. At that point, it all seems to become worth it in many ways big and small.

Think for a minute how common a black sport watch is these days. Almost no man who knows anything about colors fails to have one or two different types. Keep in mind that anything between black and its opposite, white, is just a shade variation of one of those colors. And a watch — whether digital or analog — in black can look stylish even when worn with raggedy dungarees.

In truth, anybody who knows anything about colors understands that one of the ‘must have’ colors is black. Consider how stylishly cool a new black automobile looks, even if it’s just a small economy car. Black somehow brings a bit of danger to the game. It might take a bit more to keep such a car clean but the movies have featured a hero driving a black car for years, for example. How can it be wrong?

In the world of rock ‘n roll, some of the most famous musicians in history have played instruments in that color. For instance, British rock and roller Eric Clapton — who first came to our attention during the 1960s and the ‘British Invasion’ — has played a guitar he calls ‘Blackie’ for years. It’s a Fender Stratocaster and the man and the black electric guitar go together like nothing else.

And just as the 1990s was known for a plethora of brightly colored clothing and many different objects, it would seem that this decade has been about stylish cool, which is exemplified by wide use of the color black. Motorcyclists — even those who zoom around on brightly colored Japanese bikes — all make sure they have at least one black helmet in their collection, to use one example.

It seems like black is also a color celebrated in song, especially rock songs (as Eric Clapton certainly would verify). For example, how many people remember the song ‘Back in Black?’ As a rock anthem, it’s hard to find a person who doesn’t remember when this song first broke out in wide play back in late 1980. ‘The years have flown but the song has shown, ‘ one would say.

The bottom-line about black is that it pretty much goes with everything and it goes in such a way that the image it projects is quiet cool and extreme competence in many applications. Of course, one can’t have all black in one’s life or one risks looking a little too far ‘out there, ‘ but a fair amount of black in the objects one owns can really say something.

The Internet is full of the usual and the unusual when it comes to gift suggestions.  Now I realize that everyone is out to make a buck, but that doesn’t bother me in the least.  I figure if someone can help me solve my gift quandry, then they deserve to make a profit from my purchase.  I’m an American, and we think of that as patriotism.

Is there anyplace other than the online world where I might be inspired to send my mom a New York style cheesecake instead of the same boring chocolate cake I usually sent her?  Fortunately, I can stretch this one idea out for many years simply by changing the flavor of cheesecake from one birthday to the next.

My daughter, who apparently gets her creative gift giving skills from me, found a bracelet idea for her grandmother.  It worked out beautifully for her but it raised the bar to a higher standard for me.

There are gift ideas online for various age groups like retired folks or young couples.  You can also use a search engine to find articles recommending gifts of all the gift giving occasions from Bat Mitzvahs or Easter, from anniversaries to house warmings, or even what I lovingly refer to as the “Hallmark holidays,” such as Valentine’s Day or Sweetest Day or take your terrier to work day.  If you already have the beginnings of an idea, which is already one step ahead of me, you can conduct a search for a product category.  You might be inventive enough to know that you want to buy Cousin Martha a scarf, so you can check out which ones are most popular or unique or are the greenest.  You might know that you want to buy your neighbor some accessory for his newly restored 1957 Chevy convertible.  You can actually search for specific parts for that sort of thing.  The possibilities are mind boggling for me, of course so is a toaster.

Indeed, there are entire websites created for gift klutzes just like me where people publish ideas.  Apparently they have so many ideas they can afford to give them away.  If you have any great gift ideas, please put them online so that I can find them or you could just send the item directly to me and I’ll forward it to my favorite recipient.  You can count on my everlasting appreciation.

There are many different kinds of wines, and the more commonly known ones – red, white, rose and champagne – are only a few of many.
