Traditional Spanish drink stepped out to reach millions worldwide when it was introduced to world at New York World’s trade fair held in 1964. Basically few basic ingredients like red wine, fresh juices, fruit and soda are required to make traditional sangria. It can also be made using white wine and is than called Sangria Blanca. Sangria is traced back to Rioja region, Spain’s greatest wine region. Blend of fruit and red wine gives it a blood red color. Due to its blood red color, Sangria has derived its name from Spanish word Sangre which means blood.
The beauty of Sangria is that although it is very exotic sounding and delicious, but it is incredibly easy to make. At first, you have to select your favorite red (or white) wine. Traditional Spanish taste is achieved by using Rioja for your wine. Generally one liter glass Pitchers are used to serve Sangria in restaurants. Pour your wine into a glass pitcher.
After wine is poured into the pitcher, it’s the time to add fruits. Orange is the standard fruit generally used in Sangria, but there is no restriction in using other fruits too. After you have selected your fruit, cut them into thin pieces and squeeze the juice into the pitcher, Add the remaining pieces into it.
They will blend up with the wine to give it their natural juice flavor. You can add honey or sugar as sweetener as per your taste. You can also add hard drinks like vodka or gin in your drink as per your taste.
Ice and soda are added just before serving Sangria.
No matter where in Spain you are, Sangria is available at almost every place in Spain. There is no standard taste for sangria. Its taste vary with place and with restaurants.
You can prepare your own punch as per your own taste. You can prepare your perfect Sangria by trying different ingredients.
